Three times in his letters to the Corinthian church, Paul says that God is faithful (1 Corinthians 1:9, 4:17, and 2 Corinthians 1:18). To me, this is one of the most meaningful characteristics of God: faithfulness. This means God always keeps his word. This means when God says we are loved, we are loved. When God says we are forgiven, we are forgiven. When God makes a promise, that promise is sure. This means that God will not change his mind about me or something he has said. God is faithful. And as Christians, we thank and praise God for his faithfulness!
And God asks US to be faithful, too! Also in 1 Corinthians (4:2), Paul says that stewards—those who have been entrusted with resources—must be faithful! We have been given so much by God! We are coming near to the season of Thanksgiving. We remember all we have been given by God—we ‘count our blessings’! But since we have received, God calls us to be faithful with what we have received.
At St James, we are trying to be faithful as a church. We carefully consider how our funds and your contributions are used. We are faithful to offer Christ-centered worship each week. We are faithful to reach out to people in need. Here are some of the ways we have served others this year:
-our school market program serving needy families at Holaway Elementary
-our monthly breakfast at Holaway,
-we collected toys and gifts for foster children
-we helped pack 40,000 meals with the Tucson Multifaith Packathon
-we have served many families through our church food pantry and have provided ready to eat food bags to our homeless neighbors
We are faithful to encourage one another. We are faithful to pass on our faith. We recently received several new members into our church.
I would like you to consider God’s faithfulness and respond with faithfulness of your own! Enclosed is a stewardship pledge card. It is really a DISCIPLESHIP pledge card! It is modeled on the membership vows we take to join the United Methodist Church. Will you read the commitments on the card? Will you pray about how God would want you to be involved? Complete the card and mail it in or bring it to worship! You can even stick it through the mail slot in the office door! We would like to have pledge cards returned by November 20, but we will receive them whenever you can respond. You can complete an online version below.
Let’s be faithful as God is faithful!
