Notes for the sermon “I’m So Busy!”

1-Why do we hurry?
FOMO/Too many choices
Numb feelings worries doubts questions
Make us feel significant/important/needed
We don’t know any other way/we think it’s normal
We lack direction and focus
We are people pleasers

2-What is the problem with hurry?
It is contrary to God’s plan (Sabbath/rest/peace)
It causes us to forsake important priorities
It drowns out God’s voice
It limits our options—how can we follow God? We
have no time for that.

3-What is the solution to hurry?
Know why you hurry
Margin—leave room for God/allow the space for
peace
Time with God-Notice how Jesus dealt with a busy
schedule.
Time to Reflect
Peace—God’s peace
Purpose/significance

A Breathing Prayer by Christine Sine
This is a good prayer for when you are feeling hurried, overwhelmed, or stressed.
Breathe in the breath of God
Breathe out your cares and concerns
Breathe in the love of God
Breathe out your doubts and despairs
Breathe in the life of God
Breathe out your fears and frustrations
We sit quietly before the One who gives life and love to all creation,
We sit in awe of the One who formed us in our mother’s wombs
We sit at peace surrounded by the One who fills every fiber of our being
Breathe in the breath of God
Breathe out your tensions and turmoil
Breathe in the love of God
Breathe out your haste and hurry
Breathe in the life of God
Breathe out your work and worry
We sit quietly before the One who gives life and love to all creation,
We sit in awe of the One who formed us in our mother’s wombs
We sit at peace surrounded by the One who fills every fiber of our being

THREE EXERCISES TO TRY:

1. Complete these two sentences
A-“I wish I had more time to…”|
B-“If I did, my first step would be…”
Why not take that first step? (from Abundant Simplicity by Jan Johnson)

2. List everything you do for one month. Then rank each item as (1) essential, (2) important, (3) helpful but not necessary, and (4) other. Eliminate everything in the last two categories and 20% of the first two. (from Celebration of Discipline by Richard J. Foster)

3. Write down every responsibility and obligation in your life. Cross out half of them.

FINAL THOUGHT: “What would happen if I stopped _________________” (some activity that makes you busy/hurried). Why not try it and find out?
